My Discover card authorized users cards were shut down because I refused to give out their social security numbers. I also learned that my personal account information was put on their individual credit reports.

When I asked how they could do this since Discover didn't have the users address, birthdate or social security numbers, I was told Discover used public records to tie accounts and users. In my case it was a common address over 15 years ago. The supervisor said the new required information was to insure accuraccy of the cross reporting. I was shocked that my info was so readily shared.

There is no reason for my account history to have any impact on the credit of my authorized users (employees and family). I am in the process of checking the credit reports of everyone involved to be sure there isn't a problem for anyone. My credit and account history is perfect, but their info can also impact my report. This should not be allowed.

In an age of identity theft this information needs to be secured. I contacted Visa, Mastercard and American Express and was told this is not their policy. My bank talked to the banking commision and is helping me file a complaint. I am also in contact with my state attorney general.

I am closing my Discover card account. Please let others know about this alarming policy of Discover Card and help get things changed to protect us all.

Reason of review: poor policy.

Location: Lincoln, Nebraska

this guy in the comments literally has no idea what he is talking about. it is simple and easy to remove an authorized user.

and yes, due to a recent spike in terrorism and terrorist activity, ssn's are needed for everyone on the account to verify identity. this is the case across the board. capital one does this as well. discover has the right to report in their names to the credit bureau.

they have been doing this for years. it is common knowledge at this point.

It is a good thing you are choosing to close you account, because there is NO WAY - to remove an authorized user!!!!!!!!!!!!! By adding your wife and children to your card as authorized users, they are now equal cardholders with you.

I was advised by Discover Card the ONE AND ONLY OPTION - is to CLOSE THE ACCOUNT and reopen a new account in your name only. Period. End of Story. NO other way.

I escalated this question as high as I could.

ALSO NOTE!!!! I YOU ever want to get YOUR credit limit increased - you NOW have to have your wife's and children's approval - because THEY are now an EQUAL account holder. Since this IS on their credit report now, THEY must agree and approve ANY CHANGES on the account.

I personally was attempting to increase my credit limit. I was told we needed to be the "other account holder on the phone for approval" - since an increase in credit limit would in essence be affecting HIS credit.

(The 'other' account holder was my ex husband) I said, NO - I am NOT calling my ex husband for this. Just remove my ex husband, to which I have been divorced for OVER TWENTY YEARS - and BTW - my FICO score is 850 - the highest possible. I was told THERE IS NO WAY POSSIBLE to remove the "authorized user" who - by DiscoverCard rules - is now an "equal account holder".

I wrote a letter and escalated this - CLOSE THE ACCOUNT AND REOPEN in one name only - was their final answer!
